Through every boom, every downturn, and every rate cycle since 1974, the Mansell family has kept buying, building, and holding Utah real estate. This is the story of how three generations turned a single brokerage into a name the state trusts.
Most real estate firms are built for one kind of market. Ours was built to outlast all of them. For half a century, no matter what rates did or which way prices ran, one rule held: protect the capital first, then grow it. It is the discipline that kept us buying Utah real estate through every cycle, and the same one we hold to today.
In 1974, Al Mansell opened a brokerage in Salt Lake City and set out to do business a different way, on a foundation of trust. It worked. Over the next two decades he built it into the largest independent real estate brokerage in Utah, nearly 1,600 agents at its peak, and the first firm in the state to earn the Better Business Bureau’s Ethics in Business Award.
When the brokerage was sold to Coldwell Banker in 2001, Al kept serving. He went on to lead the Utah Senate, and in 2005 to preside over the National Association of Realtors, the most influential seat in American real estate. But the family never stopped doing the thing it knew best: owning Utah ground.
Al’s son Darren grew up in the business and made it his own. In 2005, the same year his father led the country’s realtors, Darren was named the nation’s #1 Realtor, with more than 600 homes sold in a single year. Over his career he would sell more than a billion dollars of real estate and develop over 3,000 units of his own.
In 2011, a decade after the original brokerage changed hands, Darren brought the family name back to the door with Mansell Real Estate. The sign went back up, and the work continued exactly where it left off: sourcing, buying, building, and holding homes across the Wasatch Front.
Not in the downturns of the early years. Not through the crash of 2008, when others were forced to sell. Not in the frenzy that followed, and not in the rate shock of today. Across fifty years and every kind of market, the family kept acquiring, improving, and holding.
That is the difference between chasing a market and knowing one. The family could buy in every downturn for a single reason: it never put its capital at risk to begin with. Owning real homes, never over-leveraged, and investing only its own money, it was never forced to sell when others were. Preserving capital first is what made the growth possible, and it is the rule that has carried through every cycle since.
Today the third generation carries it forward. Mansell Capital is the family’s investment firm, vertically integrated with the brokerage that sources our deals and the management company that runs our homes. It is not a new venture. It is the next step in a fifty-year evolution.
For five decades the family invested only its own capital, which is exactly why capital preservation was never a slogan here, it was the rule we lived by with our own money on the line. Now that same playbook is open to outside investors for the first time, with our name on every deal and our own money invested right beside yours. When you grow with Mansell Capital, you grow with people who protected their capital first for fifty years, and never stopped growing because of it.
Fifty years of buying, building, and holding Utah real estate, through every market there is. We would be glad to put that experience to work for you.
